2. Purpose of the Statistics

• To identify the actual status of energy consumption across all demand sectors in Korea and provide foundational data necessary for national energy policy formulation
  • Estimate energy consumption volume, consumption structure, and energy intensity by demand sector and region
  • Understand energy consumption behavior in major industries
  • Provide foundational data for national policies related to energy supply and demand, greenhouse gas reduction, and demand-side management
  • Supply supplementary data for transitioning national energy supply and demand statistics and for subdividing the consumption sectors

3. Survey History

• 1981: The 1st Energy Consumption Survey (Energy Census) was conducted.
• Since then, the survey has been conducted every 3 years. The most recent, conducted in 2023, was the 15th survey.
  • Starting from the 1999 survey, the survey operations have been outsourced to external specialized research institutions.
